August Social – FOOD!

share1-900x450

Saturday August 10, 3pm
1624 Brookes Ave, San Diego, CA 92103

Join us as we partner with Good Neighbor Gardens for a fun and educational event. Good Neighbor Gardens will be showing us one of their local gardens and hopefully inspiring everybody to build one of their own!

Everyone come dig in the dirt as Walt, our grateful gardener, guides us through an interactive soil composition workshop. Learn how to organically enrich your native land, using natural amendments. He’ll give a big shout out to the real farmers, those wiggly worms who never stop working even when we’re fast asleep. We will scavenger hunt for beneficial bugs and talk about what they offer. We’ll also learn what excites the three sisters – corn, beans and squash. It’ll be a fun time diggin in the dirt at one of our urban sharecrop garden plots. It’s a potluck, so bring a dish to share.

What to bring: Food to share for the potluck, Garden Gloves, magnifying glass only if you have them, otherwise just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity

Intention – Coming together as community to celebrate, learn, share, educate & inspire! Each month will have a theme focused on a specific element of sustainable community development & healthy lifestyle.

The element of community we are focusing on for March is ‘Shelter’.  Several local organizations that are doing great work in this area will be joining us to give a short presentation on their current projects (4 Walls International & Rebuild Global).  After the presentations we will show the movie Garbage Warrior“The epic story of radical Earthship eco architect Michael Reynolds, and his fight to build off-the-grid self-sufficient communities.”

Dana Middle School Nutrition & Garden Education Program (2 internships available)

Dana Middle School Nutrition and Garden Education Program
Local Earth is working with the Dana Middle School to help implement the Nourish curriculum.  This curriculum actively engages middle school students in a meaningful conversation about food and food systems.  The activities give students opportunities to reflect on current food practices, to explore more sustainable ones, and to link their learning to relevant action.  In addition to teaching the Nourish curriculum Local Earth is working to build a garden and composting system on school grounds to provide a hands on learning experience for students and teachers.  As part of the garden program Local Earth hopes to demonstrate the full cycle of food by composting cafeteria waste into rich soil which will be used to grow healthy organic produce that the students can eat.

Local Earth Dana Middle School Interns
Local Earth is looking for two interns to be part of the Dana Middle School Nutrition and Garden Education Program.  Interns will be involved with teaching the Nourish curriculum and working with students, teachers, and the local community in the Dana Middle School garden.  Teaching experience is desired, but not necessary.  However a love of earth’s natural systems, children, gardening and good food are a must.  Interns must provide a clean LiveScan and pass a TB test prior to working on school grounds.
